Shetland MSP and Scottish Liberal Democrat, Beatrice Wishart, during a session of the Rural Affairs, Natural Environment and Islands Committee, sought clarity from the Cabinet Secretary on a new funding scheme for aquaculture and fisheries.
Once again raising the issue of non-UK vessels engaging in gillnet fishing off Shetland with the Minister, Wishart asked if new regulations would allow for any vessel operating in ‘the Scottish zone’ to be eligible for funding. Wishart was told no, and that criteria would be set to rule out non-UK vessels, but further confirmation will come in a written response.
Speaking after the session Wishart said:
“I look forward to the full written response clarifying whether non-UK vessels will be eligible.
“Speaking with the Shetland fleet I have heard some shocking stories of irresponsible and dangerous practices.
“Boats that provide a benefit to Shetland and Scotland should be given full priority in local waters.
“If we want to innovate and prepare the next fishing generation, we need to allow for accessible funding assistance.
