Asthma and Lung UK: Wishart welcomes launch

Shetland MSP, Scottish Liberal Democrat and Lung Health Champion in the Scottish Parliament, Beatrice Wishart has welcomed the launch of Asthma and Lung UK after a merger of Asthma UK and the British Lung Foundation.

Scotland has the third highest level of respiratory deaths in Western Europe. Less than 2% of all publicly funded research in the UK is spent on finding cures and treatments for breathlessness.

Wishart has been a lung health champion since the last session of the Scottish Parliament.

Ms Wishart said:

“I am proud to be a lung health champion and I hope this launch will help amplify the awareness of lung conditions. The Covid-19 pandemic has made us all consider our health a little more closely.

“Hospital admissions for lung conditions are rising. Scotland is tragically home to the one of the highest levels of respiratory deaths among our neighbours. And across Scotland more than 100,000 people are impacted by Long Covid.

“There are misconceptions that conditions such as asthma, bronchiectasis and COPD are not life-threatening or serious, but it is simply not the case. This has prevented people from getting timely and effective diagnosis and treatment, as a lung health champion I want to turn the tables on this misconception.”
