Holyrood - Wishart chairs her first Rural Affairs Committee

Scottish Liberal Democrat and Shetland MSP, Beatrice Wishart has chaired the Rural Affairs, Islands and Natural Environment (RAINE) Committee, the first time since her appointment as Deputy Convener in early September. The session focused on animal welfare with evidence given by panellists from the Scottish Animal Welfare Commission.

Ms Wishart took over the Deputy Convener position from fellow Scottish Liberal Democrat, Orkney MSP Liam McArthur. Mr McArthur Is one of two Deputy Presiding Officers in the Parliament.

In September Ms Wishart questioned panellists attending a session of the RAINE Committee on livestock worrying. Last month Ms Wishart questioned panellists on the economic impact of fixed links in Shetland.

After the Committee Ms Wishart said:

“The work of the RAINE Committee has a direct impact on Shetland. It is a great privilege to lead such sessions.

“There are many challenges and opportunities facing the committee as we work to environmental targets and develop new policies outside of the European Union framework.

“Island communities face unique challenges and a primary focus of the committee is to tackle them. I look forward to the upcoming work.”
