Isles MSP urges travellers to test before journeys

Shetland MSP and Scottish Liberal Democrat, Beatrice Wishart urges all travellers to take a Covid test before they begin their journey, and not to travel if the results are positive. This follows reports of a family on a recent sailing to Shetland having tested positive for Covid.

Scottish Government advice is to take a Covid test this festive season before any interaction, such as shopping or socialising and for those who cannot work from home. Covid testing before travelling to the Northern Isles has also been encouraged.

You can order rapid, Lateral Flow Tests (LFTs) online through the gov.uk website or by calling 119. Ms Wishart’s website provides information on Shetland-specific Covid-19 support and information on restrictions.

Ms Wishart said:

“Joining a vessel or plane without having tested beforehand is inconsiderate. I am appalled by the reports of passengers who apparently travelled on board Northlink knowing they were Covid-positive. Not only does that risk the health of fellow passengers and crew members, it endangers our lifeline services and could prevent them from running.

“We must continue to act collectively to support each other especially when we know the winter period is likely to increase cases of Covid-19, and we now know more about the speed that the Omicron variant can spread.

“Lateral Flow Tests are free and fast, they can be done within 40 minutes. I take regular tests in line with advice, and always before travelling, as they are crucial in helping disrupt transmission, protecting each other and our lifeline and medical services.”
