Today is Merchant Navy Day. I’d like to pay tribute to all Shetland’s seafarers, past and present. The date 3rd September is symbolic as it marks the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 and the sinking of the merchant ship SS Athenia, which was torpedoed hours after war was declared. This is a day to recognise the sacrifices of servicemen and women who’ve lost their lives at sea. It’s also a day to recognise the continued importance of the Merchant Navy to our islands and the people who work hard to keep us safe and deliver the goods we rely on.
