Shetland’s MSP, Scottish Liberal Democrat Beatrice Wishart, has welcomed the opening of applications for grants of up to £150,000 today through the new Island Communities Fund (ICF). Grants will be awarded to projects focussed on supporting sustainable island economies and the journey towards net zero.
Grants will come from a £2 million dedicated pot, part of the £9.5 million committed to the Islands Programme for 2021-22 by the Scottish Government. The application deadline is noon on Friday 16 July 2021 and projects should be completed by 31 March 2022.
Ms Wishart has previously called on the Scottish Government to develop sustainable infrastructure in Shetland. With the increase in electric car inquiries in Shetland she called for reliable rapid chargers (50KwH chargers) to be installed across all the islands in Shetland.
Ms Wishart said:
‘This is good news for the climate emergency. I hope this will spark minds to produce innovative projects.
‘I would urge anyone with a sustainable project in mind to apply before the July deadline. It is good that we will see the outcome of projects by March next year.
‘Bureaucracy should not be an excuse to delay our transition to ‘net zero’. I hope success in this programme will see it extended in funding and deadlines.'
