Wishart calls for “maximum effort” to deliver superfast broadband

Shetland MSP Beatrice Wishart is calling for “maximum effort” to deliver superfast broadband to Shetland following the conclusion of a legal challenge over the awarding of contract for the North Lot of R100.

The Scottish Government has confirmed that a settlement has been reached in a case launched last year by Gigaclear, paving the way for a contract to be awarded to BT to deliver broadband to northern Scotland.

Ms Wishart said:

“I’m pleased this hurdle in the R100 saga has been removed. There must now be maximum effort from the Scottish Government to ensure that a contract is signed as soon as possible so islanders know when they can expect to be connected to superfast broadband. Islanders have been left in limbo too long by this government.

“Lack of internet access is hampering the ability for people to keep connected, whether for learning, socialising or accessing services. It’s also a real challenge for efforts to make Shetland an attractive place to live and work. The impact of the coronavirus pandemic has made this digital divide all the more obvious.”
