Shetland MSP Beatrice Wishart is highlighting that the Scottish Government’s new fund to support women who have experienced mesh complication will be open for applications from 1 July 2020. Ms Wishart is encouraging eligible women in Shetland to apply.
Women who have received a transvaginal mesh implant through an NHS Scotland Health Board and who have experienced complications can apply for an one off £1,000 payment. Women can claim if they have had to pay for emotional or practical support to help manage their condition.
Commenting, Ms Wishart said:
“I would encourage anyone who has experienced complications from a transvaginal mesh procedure to check whether they are eligible for support from this fund. Whilst this funding will never fully compensate for the physical and emotional trauma associated with mesh complications, it could go some way to help women get support they need.
“There are heart-breaking stories from women who have experienced complications from mesh implants. Some women have had their lives turned upside down and aren’t able to work or hold their children because they are living in constant pain. I pay tribute to the tireless campaigning of those affected by mesh implants to seek recognition of the damage caused by the procedure, to prevent complications from happening to other women and to push for better treatments.”
