Wishart highlights Mental Health Awareness Week 2022

Shetland MSP and Scottish Liberal Democrat Beatrice Wishart has today (Monday 9th May) welcomed the launch of Mental Health Awareness Week, a national awareness raising week focused on mental health, organised by the Mental Health Foundation.

The theme this year is tackling loneliness, which is closely linked to mental health problems such as anxiety and depression and affects one in four UK adults some or all of the time. During the pandemic, loneliness increased, heightening disadvantages among groups that were already at risk.

Scottish Liberal Democrat research shows that more than 50,000 people in Scotland attend A&E due to mental health conditions each year.

Ms Wishart said:

“Mental Health Awareness Week serves to highlight the role we all have in raising awareness of mental health conditions and how to look after our mental health and wellbeing.

“Just like physical health problems, mental health problems can affect anyone, and no one should have to suffer in silence. Unfortunately, the pandemic has increased the number of people affected by loneliness and mental ill health. This has led to even greater strain on health services.

“As Co-Convener of the Cross Party Group on Mental Health, I am committed to advocating for greater support for people affected by mental ill health, such as the delivery of more local mental health practitioners. Last week in a meeting of the CPG on Health Inequalities I heard from experts about promoting health policies that tackle stigma and reduce inequalities in mental health care.

“I urge everyone to use Mental Health Awareness Week as an opportunity to learn more about mental health and how we can support each other.”
