Scottish Liberal Democrat and Shetland MSP, Beatrice Wishart opposed changes to the boundary for Shetland West council ward. Speaking against the motion in the Scottish Parliament Ms Wishart raised the concerns put to her by constituents that a new two-member ward for Shetland West would mean councillors would not be able to serve local residents appropriately across the full range of statutory and non-statutory commitments.
The vote passed by 92 votes in favour and 26 against. All Scottish Liberal Democrat MSPs joined Ms Wishart in her opposition.
Ms Wishart previously wrote to the Scottish Government over the summer about this matter and she referenced the Deputy First Minister’s response before the motion passed.
Speaking after the vote Ms Wishart said:
“I am disappointed that these changes will now be put in place especially as representations from community councils do not appear to have been taken into account.
“It would have been better to establish a seat, or retain the existing one, which would have better represented the community rather than one based purely on population size.”
