Wishart quizzes Minister over construction skills shortages in the Northern Isles

Beatrice Wishart MSP, Scottish Liberal Democrat and Shetland Islands representative has quizzed the Minister for Zero Carbon Buildings over construction skills shortages in the Northern Isles. In response to her question, the Minister stated that the Scottish Government was working with the sector to address challenges and will be updating the supply chain plan later this year.

Ms Wishart asked:

What is the Scottish Government doing to address the skills shortage in the construction industry in the islands which is impacting much needed social housing projects that have been in the pipeline for years?

After the exchange Ms Wishart said:

"I look forward to the Scottish Government announcing the update to its supply chain plan. Being at the end of the supply chain bring unique challenges to island communities and this must be baked into any changes.

"We need to tackle depopulation in the Northern Isles and one way to do this is to make sure there are homes for all those who want to live here. Supporting the construction industry by ensuring it has the workforce it needs to deliver housing projects is but one part of the solution. Schools need to do more to let young people know about the wide variety of career paths that are possible in construction which will help ensure that skills are in and available to the isles.”
