Scottish Liberal Democrat Shetland MSP Beatrice Wishart has today written to Paul Wheelhouse, Minister for Energy, Connectivity and the Islands, asking for clarity on the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions.
The letter comes after the First Minister said on Tuesday that island communities would be consulted about the lifting of restrictions though as of yet it has been reported that no contact has been made by the Scottish Government.
In the letter Ms Wishart wrote:
“The First Minister was emphatic in her statement that this consultation would be to the benefit of these communities. In the days that have followed, however, the lack of clarity about the consultation process alongside radio silence reported by island councils gives cause for concern. I raised this during this morning’s Covid-19 Committee session and the response did not provide any indication of consultation timescales. This continued lack of clarity is deeply concerning.
“As the Minister reportedly in charge of this process, I ask you to urgently share further detail on how you propose to engage with island authorities, and what timeline my constituents can expect this process to follow.”
Commenting, Ms Wishart said:
“The First Minister said that island communities would be consulted but there is no evidence yet that process has started. And it begs the question as to why the islands were not consulted at the same time as plans were being drawn up for Mainland Scotland.
“While the majority of Scotland can see a crystal clear path ahead, island communities like Shetland have been left in murky waters shrouded in uncertainty. I hope the Scottish Government provides clarity quickly.”
