Shetland MSP Beatrice Wishart is seeking an urgent update on future of the Air Discount Scheme.
Ms Wishart has written to the Transport Secretary, Michael Matheson, to seek an urgent update on continuation of the Air Discount Scheme (ADS). In March 2019 ADS was renewed until 31 December 2020 but no announcement has been made about the future of the scheme past that date.
ADS was introduced in 2006 by the then Liberal Democrat Transport Minister, Tavish Scott, recognising the high cost of air travel for islanders.
Ms Wishart said:
“ADS is absolutely essential for islanders’ lifeline air travel. Air travel to the Mainland is already expensive and without the 50% discount on fares, it would be prohibitive to many people. The scheme was introduced by Tavish Scott when he was Transport Minister. The SNP Government needs to show it too recognises how valuable ADS is. We need urgent confirmation that the scheme will continue next year, on at least the same terms.”
