Scottish Liberal Democrat and Shetland MSP, Beatrice Wishart, met with local apprentices during the annual Scottish Apprenticeship Week. This year’s theme is ‘Skills Generation’ focusing on the benefits for life passed down to apprentices and the benefits of a skilled workforce for all those in Scotland.

Ms Wishart met with employers, apprentices and managers from Cooke Aquaculture, Sound Butchers, the social care sector at the Walter and Joan Gray Home, Shetland Islands Council construction, warehousing and stores departments and business administration.

Nearly 40,000 apprentices are in training across Scotland. 91% of apprentices remain in work or employment after their apprenticeship. Over 80% of those who completed a ‘Modern Apprenticeship’ progressed to a better job. Scottish Apprenticeship Week runs from 4th - 8th March 2024.

Ms Wishart said:

“Apprenticeships are a vital component of Shetland’s skilled workforce, and ultimately our economy.

“For generations there have been apprenticeships. The skills taught may change over time but the benefits of learning while earning are timeless.

“I always enjoy meeting with and hearing directly from apprentices of all ages about their chosen career path, their learning experience and their achievements. Employers and managers are also keen to share how important apprenticeships are to their future business developments.”
