Scottish Liberal Democrat and Shetland MSP Beatrice Wishart called on the First Minister for action by the Scottish Government following a report by the University of Strathclyde’s Centre for Energy Policy on the Sullom Voe Oil Terminal indicating that, subject to BP's decision on Clair Phase 3, around 250 jobs could be at risk over the next 10 years across the Shetland economy.

Speaking in the Chamber Ms Wishart asked the First Minister:

“The First Minister will be aware of the recent research from the University of Strathclyde’s Centre for Energy Policy indicating that jobs at the Sullom Voe Oil Terminal depend on BP's decision about the Clair expansion.

“It is estimated that 250 jobs could be impacted across the Shetland economy which would be devastating for our island community.

“Can the First Minister indicate what action his Government will take following this new research?”

In his response, the First Minister highlighted the continued dialogue of the Scottish Government with the UK Government regarding the Energy Profits Levy.

After the exchange Ms Wishart

“This new report highlights that Shetland could be at risk of job losses at Sullom Voe and more widely across the wider supply eco-system if Phase 3 of the Clair field does not go ahead.

“Shetland’s economy, like many island and rural economies, is fragile.

“I’m calling for the First Minister and the Scottish Government to do all they can to act in the best interests of Shetland workers.”
