Scottish Liberal Democrat and Shetland’s MSP, Beatrice Wishart, met with local apprentices to highlight awareness week. This year’s theme is Unlocking Potential, with the aim of showcasing what individuals and employers can achieve through apprenticeships.
Wishart met with employers and apprentices at Shetland MOT & Repair, E&H Building Contractors, and the Hame fae Hame nursery in Scalloway, as well as UHI Shetland representatives.
A survey of apprentices found that an apprenticeship helped 77% improve their communication skills, as well as 74% reporting working better with others and 20% improving problem solving skills. Employer feedback found 83% improved productivity from taking on an apprentice, as well as 79% finding boosted morale and 96% of employers recommending Apprenticeships.
Scottish Apprenticeship Week runs from 6th - 10th March and can be followed on social media, #ScotAppWeek23 #UnlockingPotential. Foundation, Modern and Graduate Apprenticeships are supporting over 43,000 apprentices and 12,000 businesses across the country.
Ms Wishart said:
“The evidence is clear that employers and employees benefit from apprenticeship placements.
“Apprenticeships provide valuable skills for the future, with nationally recognised qualifications, and are an investment in the workforce.
“Shetland’s apprentices will go on to increase their skills while contributing to Shetland’s economy.
“Good luck to everyone involved in local apprenticeship programmes.
“With apprentices of all ages it shows you’re never too old to learn while you earn.”
