Scottish Liberal Democrat and Shetland MSP, Beatrice Wishart has praised the work of carers during the annual Carers Week running from 5-11 June 2023. Wishart joined charities, organisations and individuals to show support for the millions of unpaid carers in the UK - and to spread the word about the challenges they face throughout the year and what needs to be done to improve their daily lives.
Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring and help people who don't think of themselves as having caring responsibilities to identify as carers and access much-needed support. Established by Carers UK 27 years ago, Carers Week celebrates and recognises the vital contribution made by Scotland’s 1.1 million unpaid carers.
Ms Wishart said:
“Carers Week is an opportunity to thank all of the hardworking carers out there. It is also a chance to recognise the work of charities and organisations that assist carers.
“It was evident during the pandemic how many people with caring responsibilities are out there. They deserve help, support and recognition for the role they play.
“We should be finding every means to ease the pressures carers face, whether that's assisting with finances, building respite, providing support for mental health or just shining a light on all that they do.”
