Wishart presses FM over future of Eastern Airways routes
Scottish Liberal Democrat and Shetland MSP Beatrice Wishart has today pressed the First Minister on the need for a statement from the Scottish Government following the collapse of Eastern Airways.
Speaking at First Minister’s questions Ms Wishart highlighted the reported 330 redundancies, and the nine people affected in her Shetland constituency.
The MSP also asked what discussions the Scottish Government has had about an alternative airline providing the Public Service Obligation (PSO) route running between Wick to Aberdeen and transport links for offshore energy workers using Sumburgh Airport.
Earlier in the week Ms Wishart and fellow Scottish Liberal Democrats, including Shetland candidate Emma Macdonald, called on the Scottish Government for a statement on the situation.
After the exchange at First Minister’s Questions Ms Wishart said:
“I am disappointed that the First Minister did not commit his government to a statement on the issue.
“Many will be worried about what to expect after the collapse of Eastern Airways.
“It is a great blow to workers including those in Shetland who reportedly face unemployment.”
Emma Macdonald commented:
“Supporting lifeline services should be right at the top of any Scottish Government agenda.
“Sumburgh is a hub at the heart of North Sea energy generation and any impact will be felt in the local economy.
“Understanding the Scottish Government’s response would help all those impacted, so it is a shame the First Minister could not commit to a statement on the situation.”
