Wishart raises Shetland Women’s Aid “Voices of Women in Shetland” survey in Parliament
Beatrice Wishart, MSP for Shetland and Scottish Liberal Democrat, has raised the findings of the Shetland Women’s Aid “Voices of Women in Shetland” survey in the Scottish Parliament.
To coincide with International Women’s Day, Shetland Women’s Aid published their survey report which provides a detailed analysis of women’s experiences of safety, inequality, and gender-based violence in Shetland, using women’s own words.
Speaking during Justice and Home Affairs Portfolio Questions yesterday, Ms Wishart highlighted the survey shows that 57% of respondents report being affected by gender-based violence. 60% of those affected did not receive support and three-quarters chose not to report to the police.
Ms Wishart asked the Minister for Victims and Community Safety how the Scottish Government is tackling a culture of misogyny that makes it harder for gender-based violence to be reported and survivors supported.
In her response the Minister requested a copy of the survey.
Reacting after the exchange, Ms Wishart said:
“Shetland Women’s Aid’s valuable report gives policymakers, public services and community organisations an important insight into women’s experiences of sexism and gender-based violence in Shetland.
“I extend my thanks to everyone who took time to share their experiences through the survey.
“The fact that many women who experience harm do not feel able to report it or access support must be taken seriously.
“The survey reflects the strong sense of community in Shetland. We can ensure by listening to what women are saying and responding accordingly, Shetland can be a more inclusive, safer place for everyone.
“I have sent a copy of the report to the Minister and I look forward to her response.”
